embarrassing moments

Thanks to a post over at Mommy Knows about embarrassing moments I decided to take a few minutes to share mine.

After much thought I can remember quite a few embarrassing moments. So here's an old one.

I was going into high school and HAD to look my best and so after weeks of asking (begging) my mom for a cute pair of heals I got my wish. I decided to wear them on my first day of school. You know, to get off on the right foot. ha ha...ok, cheesy.

On the first day of school I walked to the bus since there is no way in hell I would be caught dead being dropped off by my mom. So I met up with some friends and we walked to the bus. Our neighbors were landscaping their backyard and had rocks all over the street and I managed to step on one and went down. I scraped up my knee pretty bad and was bleeding. Ok, so I was a little disappointed but I carried on, and rubbed it off and acted cool.

I got to school and was ready to strut myself when I noticed the varsity football team sitting in the outdoor court area. I had that "I'm too sexy...on the catwalk" song going and I was working it. The guys were definitely noticing me and they were checking out my legs.

Ohhhh, Yeah!!!

Wait, they were really checking out my legs. I looked down only to notice that I was still bleeding and my knee was gushing blood down my leg resembling a horror flick. And as I was looking down I tripped on some uneven bricks and fell...hard. It was awful. I wanted to just lie there and die but luckily one the hot guys came and helped me up. I managed to cut up the other knee this time and needed to go to the school nurse to get bandages because the blood wouldn't stop. I was late to my first class and walked in with about 6 bandaids on each knee (thanks to the school nurse who only carries giant maxi pads and small bandaids). Awkward.

Years later I had blocked this memory from my mind when my best friend introduced me to her new boyfriend (a senior on the varsity team). When he said he knew who I was I assumed that it was because of my great rep. He responded with something like, "You're that chick that ate it on the first day of school. Dude, did you ever stop bleeding?"

Nice. Those shoes met the trash that day.

magic jack

Ok ladies, I am all about great deals and sharing the love. I have been looking over our monthly bills and seeing where I can save since we are a one income family.

We have a bundled deal with Qwest where we are supposed to get our home phone with all the works including long distance, direct tv cable, and our internet for around $100. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it is. After taxes and all the little add ons our bill was closer to $200 a month. Considering the fact that we have cell phones and only use our home phone about once a day I set out on a mission to decrease our bills.

After doing a lot of research (web surfing) I came across Magic Jack. It's a phone service that works through your internet by plugging in this little usb jack from your computer to your phone line. It comes with voicemail, long distance to the US and Canada, and is well equipped with the extras like call waiting and caller id. And get this...it costs only $40 for the first year and $20 for every year after that. They offer a free trial (minus shipping, of course) so we decided to try it out.

Negatives: they don't have a lot of area codes to choose from, you can't keep your same number, the jack sticks right out of the computer and it's easy to knock out.

Positives: loud and clear phone conversations, haven't experienced any interruptions or not being able to call out, 911 address form, you get an e-mail letting you know when you have a voicemail, customized phone book on your computer, voicemail, caller id, and call waiting, but most importantly...it's $40 a year!!!

We love it and have been very happy with it. We also switched to our cable company for a faster internet at the same price. We now pay $60 for cable (includes a dvr and two rooms of service), $35 for internet, and under $4 for phone service for a total of $100 a month AFTER taxes.

We did it

We put in the transfer for North Dakota.

We had an opportunity to put more than one town and waited so long so that we could pick a few locations but the more we looked the more North Dakota looked like the best bet. Before mommy hood I would have chosen a big city with a great nightlife and job opportunities out the wah-zoo. Now I look to see how many sex offenders reside there, the school stats, and if there is a local moms club. North Dakota won hands down in everything BUT the moms club. But I can start one if we move there.

Now we will just wait and see if are chosen. We should know in the next 3 months and it depends on so many different factors that there is no way to know at this point. We have left this in God's hands and I know that if it's meant to be it will happen.

In the mean time I will start spring cleaning now considering they will most likely give us less than a month to relocate.

North Dakota?

The transfers have opened and we must have lost our minds because we are thinking about putting in a transfer to Grand Forks, North Dakota. I know...crazy. We live in the hottest place in the US year round and as I type this I am wearing capris and a short sleeved tee with sandals. Neither my husband or I have ever lived in he snow and we are a little afraid of whether we will make it or not.
Another concern we have with Grand Forks is flooding. Every time I google Grand Forks I get numerous pictures of the flood of '97. It's very scary. Yeah, they have since put up barriers, and secured this or that so that it won't happen again.
To be honest our options of places to transfer are slim and most are very rural. I like a small town but I need to be able to drive down to Target on a whim to buy something I don't need. Grand Forks seems to have that and what's more important is that we can buy a huge and beautiful home for the same price as a townhouse down here in the southwest. And the schools are better, life is slower, and you get to know your neighbors. Ok, so it sounds like I am sold on this place, right? We'll see in a few months if we were selected to transfer. At least it will be spring when (if) we move and we won't go into snow shock (a new condition I just made up).

A little behind

I am a little behind on the Christmas photos but better late than never (words I live by). You will get my New Years post next month. j/k

We had my family come out for Christmas and it was great. My in-laws are coming this weekend to celebrate a late Christmas with us. My son was overwhelmed with constant attention and presents everywhere he turned and he loved every minute of it. His 'thing' right now is Hot Wheels, cars, and trains. Basically anything that can go fast or crash. Gotta love boys, right? He got a ton of cars, race tracks, train tracks, etc. He is set for quite some time and my house is bursting at the seams with toys.
My husband and I usually get a big gift for the house (this year a new tv) and then some stocking stuffers or little things adding up to about $50-$100 max. From everyone I got some new books that I have wanted for a while, some make-up, a digital frame, margarita mix (my husband knows what makes mama happy), bath & body stuff, etc.
It was yet another great year and my son is still singing Jingle Bells and wishing everyone a "Merr-wee Cist-mas!
